Walking in Memphis: A Cobb Family Favorite

Updated: Jul 22, 2023

Memphis, TN – a city that holds a special place in my heart, as it's not just a destination I visited once but a city my family has been returning to for many years. As Debra and I excitedly embarked on this journey, memories of past trips flooded my mind, each one leaving a unique imprint on my soul. Our recent adventure would not only be about relishing the sights and flavors of Memphis but also about revisiting cherished memories and creating new ones.

No trip to Memphis would be complete without a stop at Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken. Tucked away, this unassuming eatery has earned a reputation for serving up some of the most delectable and crispy fried chicken in the South. As soon as we entered, the tantalizing aroma of fried goodness enveloped us, making our mouths water with anticipation. It was everything we remembered and more – a truly satisfying culinary experience that set the tone for the rest of our adventure.

With our appetites satisfied, we were ready to explore the heart and soul of Memphis. Our first stop was Beale Street, a historic thoroughfare known for its rich musical heritage. As we strolled along the vibrant street, the lively tunes of blues and jazz echoed from the numerous bars and clubs. The energy was infectious, and we couldn't help but dance to the rhythm of the music.

We jumped on the trolley and then made our way to the iconic Sun Studio, often referred to as the "Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll." Standing in the same room where legendary artists like Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash once recorded their hits was a surreal experience. The guided tour took us through the studio's history, filling us with a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era.

Of course, no visit to Memphis would be complete without paying our respects to the King of Rock 'n' Roll himself. We drove past and waved at the gates at Graceland, Elvis Presley's beloved home. We also made a trip down to Mud Island and the Bass Pro Shop.

As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves at the Mississippi River Park, watching the sunset paint the sky with brilliant hues of orange and pink. The serene view of the Mississippi River brought a moment of tranquility after an exhilarating day of exploration.

Our visit to Memphis left us with a treasure trove of memories. From the mouthwatering delights at Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken to the soulful beats of Beale Street and the historic landmarks that shaped the city's musical legacy, every moment was a testament to the city's vibrant culture and rich history.

As we bid farewell to Memphis, we carried with us the warmth of its people and the spirit of its music. Walking in Memphis was not just a trip; it was a walk down memory lane.
